The story and tradition of Lauscha glass is inseparably connected to "Thuringian Forest Glass”. The first glasses that were produced in Lauscha were distinctive for their pale green color and numerous tiny air bubbles. The greenish tone of the Forest Glass was a result of the high iron content in the sand from the Thuringian Forest.
The air bubbles, so called “Gispen”, were a result of low melting temperatures. Historically, the sand and other additives were melted over a wood fire. It was just not possible to melt the glass at high enough temperatures to allow the air bubbles to rise to the top of the crucible and escape.
After more than 400 years the Farbglashuette Lauscha is producing Thuringian Forest Glass once again. There is a commitment to going back to our historical roots and producing traditional objects from this beautiful subtle glass. Our focus is on producing glasses and vessels that resemble glasses and vessels produced centuries ago. We place a great deal of value on supporting the local glass making tradition. On these glasses and vessels, we place our trademark stamp, the butterfly, a symbol of our quality, at the point where the glassblowers pipe is removed from the glass.
We decorate the glasses and vessels with simple and elegant ornamentation – pulled drops, applied glass designs, that enhance the design by enhancing the effect of natural light on the glasses. Today, the lover of glass can find much to enjoy in our traditional Thuringian Forest Glass – unmistakable quality and design makes this exclusive series something to admire and appreciate. |
